CHARACTER
Name: Athena Cykes
Canon: Ace Attorney (more specifically, Dual Destinies)
Age: 18
Timeline: post-”Turnabout for Tomorrow”

Personality:

WARNING! There will be a some spoilers in this section of the application! You have been warned.

Athena is the type of girl who wears her heart on her sleeve. Almost a little literally. She's emotional to a point where she empathizes with people, especially those who she cares about. Of course, a huge part of this is because of her special ability to hear the emotions in people's voices. Because of this ability, Athena tends to also be pretty overemotional in response to other people's emotions, which tends to have her overreact. However, this part of her isn't all that there is to Athena. Now, in order to understand Athena, it is best if we understand where she came from.

As a child, Athena was someone who was alone, didn't have many friends, and tended to stay in her home, the Themis Space Center. She was awkward around others that weren't Juniper - her best friend, who she affectionately calls 'Junie' - the robots, and her mother.

Of course, she also had conflicting feelings with her mother: for a very long time, she didn't know what to think of her; to Athena, her mother was someone who she loved, yet at the same time, she thought was a person who only did experiments on her for her own scientific gain. But when her mother died, it left Athena with a psychological impact: it caused her to suppress her traumatic memories deep inside her heart, not wanting to remember what had truly happened to her mother or the true murderer.

After her mother's death, Simon Blackquill, a student of Athena's mother, was convicted for her mother. But Athena knew better: she could hear his heart screaming that he didn't do it. Nobody believed her, and it caused a fear in Athena's heart. A fear of the courtroom. During the first and third cases in Dual Destinies, it is shown that although Athena tries her hardest to be brave - mostly because she wanted to save Simon with all her heart; her feelings for him are that strong - there are times when she panics, freezes in place, and her mind completely goes blank. Her biggest fear is to not be heard; to not have anyone listen to the words that she's saying. To not be able to be believed in.

Because of all that's happened, Athena decided to work hard and change herself to become a more confident, happy-go-lucky girl who could do almost anything. Athena is a really hard worker, and when it comes down to it, she can do almost anything if she tries. Her heart is dedicated, and there's nothing that can stop her once her mind's made up. Needless to say, Athena is nothing short of a genius, especially when it comes to psychology. Just as a reminder, though: she studied psychology for two reasons: one being to be close to her mother, who was also in the same field, and another was to give herself an edge in court since it fit well with the ability that she personally had. She's also studied other things as well, such as combat in order to protect herself. Though sometimes it may come as a reflex, unfortunately.

Regardless of her fear of the court, Athena isn't the type of person to sit and mope around. She prioritizes others over herself, she's a huge people person and she doesn't want to disbelieve in anyone without a good reason. It's a huge reason why she became an attorney in the first place: in order to help others. She wants to be able to become strong so she can help others who are crying, which is why she is practically one who fits the idea of "A lawyer smiles until the very end". After all, she always keeps her tears in, and though it's easy to tell how she's feeling, she prioritizes other people's feelings over her own. This is shown in several cases, including her own.

As a lawyer, Athena is still new with not much experience. Sometimes she puts her foot in her mouth and says things that aren't right for the situation, and sometimes, it might even cost them. Regardless, Athena has a lot of heart and drive, something that is absolutely necessary for a good lawyer. She also truly cares about her team, both her Boss (Phoenix Wright) and her friend and co-lawyer, Apollo Justice. She respects them a lot, and even though she sometimes likes to tease and make fun of her friends, but it's not as if she doesn't care about them.

When it comes to her best friend, Juniper, she absolutely enjoys making fun of her a little bit. A little out of jealousy, especially since Juniper gets all the guys and she doesn't, but it's all in good fun. She also tends to tease when it comes to the fact that Juniper likes Apollo, and well, Apollo doesn't seem to get the hint. Which is why Athena subtly sends hints over that direction. Even if he doesn't get the picture. Yet.

Athena is also a huge klutz. A huge part of this is due to being too excited for things, especially when it comes to helping other people. Which is why sometimes she trips, falls, and well, other things as well. Also, even though she loves animals, animals do not necessarily love her.

Background:
• On Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies as a game.
• On Athena’s background.
Court Records

Abilities:
Ever since she was a little girl, Athena has always had sensitive ears, or rather, special hearing. This allows her to hear sounds that ordinary people wouldn’t be able to hear, and her hearing at times is quite sensitive to the point that loud sounds irritate her. She is also able to hear the emotions of people’s hearts, especially when they’re speaking loud and clear, as well as when there seems to be discord in the tone of their voice. However, she cannot always discern all emotional statements, especially when there’s discord in said person’s voice.

Which is why she has Widget, a device created by her mother that allows her to see the images and emotions a lot more clearly to find the contradictions between testimony and emotions with the Mood Matrix program. However, the program can be hacked with enough experience.

Athena is also an able fighter as seen in the second case when she suplexes someone. So she’s not just some defenseless young girl. She also speaks various languages (German, Spanish, French, Italian, etc), though sometimes it’s just that she’s inserting random words from said languages. And she’s an attorney, but that’s probably nothing special.

... Oh, and she can sing too. Apparently.

First Person:

[ When Athena turns on her pocketwatch, she grins with a huge cheerful smile, and in fact, it’s not too hard to tell what she’s feeling. Widget pretty much says it all: she’s all too happy, excited even. With a loud, over-the-top, yet enthusiastic voice, she finally speaks up. ]

Rise and shine, everyone! Guten morgen! Are you guys psyched up for today? Because I sure am! I’ve done my daily jog and orange juice, so nobody’s going to stop me now!

[ She then flashes a victory sign, redoubling her grin. ]

Alright, so there’s only a few days before Christmas so we’ve got to hurry and get things done! ¡Vamanos! ¡Andale! We’ve got to get those presents wrapped and ready just in time, and those letters to Santa sent. So, come on, everyone, get in the spirit! We can’t have everyone acting like Scrooges if we really want a White Christmas, right?

OK! And now since that’s done and over with… hey, Junie! Apollo! Boss! And you too, Simon! And everyone else who I might or might not have forgotten! We’re going to make this the best Christmas in Ruby City ever, so you better get ready for it! Let’s do this! Lohs gehts!

Third Person:

“It’s okay, Athena, you can do this.”

The young defense attorney spoke to herself quietly, clenching her hands into tight fists as she walked deep into the foggy train station, uncertain as to where she was. The last memory she had before blanking out was riding a train; although as to why, she had absolutely no clue. She was scared, that was for certain, and she knew it all too well. However, she didn’t want to show it on her face, although Widget was a tell-tale sign as to how she was feeling. Trying to reassure herself, she gripped tightly onto Widget, saying the same words again.

But soon enough, the caws of a crow was heard from far away, a sound that caused her to shiver slightly. The place she was in was scary, and dark as well. It wasn’t a place that she had ever seen before, not here, not ever. Her heart was screaming, deep down, and she wanted to go home. As soon as that thought entered her mind however, she spun around, realizing that the train that had brought her there was already gone, without a trace.

That was certainly strange, especially for her. Usually she could, at the very least, hear the chugging of the trains as it passed by. Maybe she was simply not paying enough attention.

Eyes gazed upwards, noting the sights as well as checking all areas for clues. To her, this was just like a normal investigation: something that even she could do. Even though she was still nervously shaking, she had to do something about her situation. It just simply had to be done.

“Okay, it doesn’t look like the train’s going to come back anytime soon. Maybe I should call Boss up and tell him that I’m lost.” After having spoken those words, she shifted through her belongings, taking out her cellphone that lay among her notes as well as a map, just in case. Turning on her phone, she stared at the screen for another few moments before realization washed over her. There was absolutely no signal.

Glancing around again, taking a double take at her surroundings, she saw a sign, which wrote:

Welcome to Ruby City.
The watch you found functions as a communications device.
There is a group of people here already, so please make yourself known.
Those in need of immediate medical care will be assisted.
Those who wish to destroy the city or cause unwarranted mayhem will be dealt with swiftly and efficiently.
The areas highlighted on the map are open to newcomers without a place to go.
If you have any other questions, feel free to use your communicators to get in contact with someone.

"What watch?" Athena spoke aloud to nobody in particular before fishing through her pocket, finding a pocketwatch, causing the young attorney to jump back in shock, eyes wide in surprise. "Huh? How did this get here?!"

Biting her lower lip in confusion, she simply opened the watch, completely in awe as she decided on her next move. It was time to get the ball rolling!
